HOW KELPIES CAME TO SWEDEN

It was Stormkappan that first introduced the Kelpie breed into Sweden in 1973.

The first pair, Byrosi Barkem and Pavesi Tar Baby, were Show Kelpies with some working Kelpies in their ancestry, but already in 1974 the first purebred Working Kelpie bitches were imported,ELFINVALE ALMIRA and ELFINVALE ANITA.
Their breeder, T.G:Austin, registered some of his dogs with the ANKC, which made it possible to have them registered here.

Pavesi Tar Baby and Byrosi Barkem Elfinvale Almira

Byrosi Barkem and Elfinvale Almira had 28 pups together and many of those became very successful at what we in Sweden call working trials, e.g. tracking, searching etc.and also at sheepdog trials.
One of them was Stormkappans Red Emblem, who got a 2nd prize at a sheepdog trial and became Swedish and Norwegian Show Champion, another was Stormkappans Red Igor who became a Trial Champion and Stormkappans Tan Lily who was both a Nordic Obedience Champion and Trial Champion.
Her litter mates Red Lancer and Red Loona were qualified at sheepdog trials, as well as Red Randy and Red Ruby in a later litter.

Barkem also produced good progeny mated to other bitches, among others Stormkappans Red Quincy, Obedience Ch, Trial Ch and certified sheepdog, Red Quinney Obedience Ch. And Red Quito, Ob. And Trial Ch out of Jumbuck Red Belle, herself a qualified sheepdog and competing in Winners´Class at sheepdog trials. Also Jumbuck Disco, Ob. and Trial Ch, and Jumbuck Eddie, Ob. Ch and certified sheepdog out of Stormkappans Red Cindy, and Stormkappans Red Topper, Swedish and Norwegian Ob.Ch out of Tanja and Gendogs Akleja, certified sheepdog.

In 1981 I imported a Working Kelpie male, ELFINVALE HYLAND, who was a better worker on sheep and had significantly more eye than we were used to seeing among Kelpies here.
One of his daughters out of Elfinvale Vaksam, DULCIE, produced many good sheepdogs, for instance STORMKAPPANS YARICO who competed in Winners´Class with sheep and STORMKAPPANS BOOMERANG who competed in Winners Class both with sheep and cattle.

Stromkappans Boomerang

In the the middle 80ies it became possible to import Working Kelpies registered with the Working Kelpie Council of Australia (WKC) into Sweden via Norway, and in 1987 I brought back SCORIOCHRE POLLY from a trip to Australia (placed 6th in Winners´ Class sheep trial). She produced some outstanding progeny by different stud dogs, among others STORMKAPPANS EERIN, STORMKAPPANS ERAWAR and STORKAPPANS IONA who also competed in Winners´ and in the Swedish National. Apart from that she also became both Trial Ch., Obedience Ch and Agility Ch.

Stormkappans IonaStrathblane Drover

During the last part of the 80ies I, together with Anders Ericson and Kaj Sjunnesson, imported a male, STRATHBLANE DROVER, that sired many good workers, among others the abovementioned Iona, and a bitch GLENLOGIE BELL (litter sister to Glenlogie Lucky) who proved to be the best worker of all, particularly when it came to working cattle. She was placed 5th in Winners´ Class at a cattle dog trial and 6th at the same class in a sheepdog trial. Among her progeny can be noted Stormkappans Ganba and Gundai, both 1st prize winners at sheepdog Open trials by Drover, and Stormkappans Parra placed 6th in Winners´at a sheepdog trial with certificate (you need three certificates to become a Sheepdog Champion) by Stormkappans Boomerang,

When importing Working Kelpies from Australia I have always alwas been looking for “old” unrelated bloodlines and tried to avoid the popular – and unfortunately very closely inbred lines that are dominated by one matador stud dog. First and foremost to help us get as wide a genetic variety as possible for our Swdish breeding. Thus none of my imports have been related to one another and only one, Glenlogie Bell (deceased) was related to the breeding matador in Australia.
